Ms. America's Touch of Class 2007
Eileen Safford
Eileen Safford "Ms. Utah America's Touch of Class 2007" was also crowned the FIRST "Ms. America's Touch of Class 2007" for the America's Touch of Class system. She will be traveling to promote her platform of “CAPPS” Child Abuse and Prevention with Peers in Schools (Focus on bullying). She will visit schools in Utah, Idaho, California and talk to junior high and high school students about what they say and how they say it!!!! She will inform them that fighting and hurting someone does not always mean laying a hand on them. You can do just as much if not more damage by what we say to them, and how we say it… “CAPPS” Child Abuse and Prevention with Peers in Schools (Focus on bullying) Eileen describing more about her platform: I visit schools in Utah, Idaho, California and talk to junior high and high school students about what they say and how they say it!!!! We inform them that fighting and hurting someone does not always mean laying a hand on them. You can do just as much if not more damage by what we say to them, and how we say it… We approach this subject in a way that lets everyone see how we can affect others; some of the ways we do this are through 5 minute activities in their classrooms or in a large assembly. I also tell them they are not alone and that people who choose to bully others are also hurting but express it in the only way they have been taught (through anger). Why she chose it: I grew up in the foster care system and went through 42 foster homes. I was bullied in school for the clothes I wore and the way my hair looked. I didn’t have the best of the best and the other kids took advantage of that. I always knew that things would get better but didn’t know when. When I was introduced to the people who are now my Mother and Father I knew that they were for me. I had come to them with nothing and they accepted me without any reservations. Don’t get me wrong I was no angel growing up but the lessons I learned I will never forget. I could have given up but chose to better myself; I believed what everyone was saying about me: other students and some adults. Yes, adults can bully others including students…..and until I said “No More” I stood up for myself and was not going to let anyone bring me down again. Volunteering is important, and how can you can help too: Find something you are passionate about and then go to your community center or city hall and find out if they need volunteers for them. You can also check with your church and the mayor’s office. Ask a relative if they volunteer and ask how they got into it. What is the history of her platforms? Give information about how and why you became involved: I created “CAPPS” because of what I went through for 15 years…. I was in the foster care system until I was 18. I was lucky to be adopted by two great people who I am proud to call my parents. I knew I needed to tell my story and to also help others who can’t help themselves. I look at the faces of the kids I talk to and I know we make a difference. If I help one child then I have succeeded.
