"Miss Florida A.T.O.C. 2007" was crowned "Miss America's Touch of Class
2007". Amber's Platform will be keeping her busy this year, she calls it
"America on the Run" Her platform, “America on the Run”, is developed to
help encourage people of all ages to become more physically fit. By
promoting exercise and physical fitness, I hope to continue to show people
that a fit body leads to a fit mind. Her goal is to show that whether you’re
a star athlete or wheelchair bound, everyone can make a change.
Why she chose it:
Living in a world of fast food, video games, and T.V., I decided it was time
for a change. When I took a look at my own community, it was obvious that
people were not including exercise into there everyday lives. I decided I
wanted to challenge these brainwashing video games and drowning television
shows, and prove to the public that exercise can be just as addicting.
Volunteering is important, and how can anyone else help:
I have made volunteering a major part of my life, and I hope to one day see
it incorporated in other peoples lives. People can get involved with
“America on the Run” by contacting me at Islandqueenfl@aol.com for local
race schedules and events in Florida. People can also get involved by just
simply becoming part of the world of fitness. Just by getting beyond the T.V.
and computer screen and staying fit, will help the main goal of this
platform.
What is the history of her platforms cause?
The history of my platform dates back to before I was born. My grandfather
was a star track runner at the University of Notre Dame. Then I choose to
follow by being a track runner at my own school. Along with myself being a
runner, my uncle is a three time Boston Marathon qualifier and a New York
Marathon qualifier. I am also training along side with close people in my
life to compete in triathlon races. So this legacy will repeat itself by my
platform educating people of all ages that “a fit body leads to a fit mind.”
Information about how and why you became involved:
I became involved by attending local races and sporting events, and
encouraging people to continue with their fitness routine. I have also
spoken to audiences about why exercise is so important and how it can change
their lives. One of the main reasons I became involved was after seeing a
family member struggle with obesity. I saw how many limitations they had,
and wanted to help educate people on this problem.
Other information she feel is important:
I am a student at Indian River Community College studying elementary
education, and currently on the Dean’s List. As stated, I have made
volunteering a vital part of my life. I have spent over 700 hours in the
past four years volunteering. I worked with the D.A.R.E. Role Model program
for three years, speaking to kids about peer pressure and drug avoidance. I
also became a certified American Red Cross Disaster Service volunteer after
all of the hurricanes in Florida. Some other organizations that I work hand
in hand with include, Knights of Columbus, Habitat for Humanity, St.
Joseph’s Food for the Homeless, and Greyhound Pets of America. One of my
greatest accomplishments was when I was chosen by my T.V. production class
to interview Reverend Jesse Jackson about the importance of staying in
school. Some of my pastimes include, scuba diving, ballroom dancing, scrap
booking, running, swimming, biking, and martial arts.
